FIRST GRADE NEWS--September 2010
READING:

This month we will be exploring what good readers do and
getting to know our classroom library. Children will listen to stories read
aloud, as well as practice reading stories at their independent level. Our
comprehension strategy will be making connections (thinking what a story reminds us of in our own lives). Our read-alouds will include: Moonbear's Books and Annie, Bea and Chi Chi Dolores. You can help by reading to and with your child every day.
WRITING:

Children will learn about the writing process through the
Writing Workshop. Each day the children will watch the teacher model good writing practice and then try it out in their own writing. This month children will be writing stories from their lives. You can help by encouraging your child to draw and write about daily activities.
PHONICS/WORD WORK:

Every day we will be learning about letters,
letter sounds and sight words. This month we will be focusing on word
awareness, rhyme, compound words and syllables. We will be practicing our handwriting—reviewing letter formation and letter sounds. We will also start having weekly sight words and spelling tests. You can help by
practicing handwriting and spelling words at home with your child.
MATH:

Our math program emphasizes the importance of math in our
everyday lives. This month the children will be working on: numbers and
counting, calendar math, tools for doing math, comparing numbers (greater than and less than), tallying, probability and number stories. You can help by asking your child to count and write numbers, and giving them simple word problems to solve.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:

This month in science we will be exploring
weather and seasons, with a focus on fall. In social studies, we will be
developing first grade “Hopes and Dreams” and classroom rules. We will
explore classroom materials and work in partners and small groups. As a
Responsive Classroom school, we believe that a child?s social learning is just as important as academic learning. You can help by talking with your child about what they hope to accomplish in first grade.
